It is with deep sadness and a sense of profound loss, that I join with the Executive Committee, general membership, and supporters of the National Democratic Congress in extending sincerest condolences to our sister Mrs. Jacqueline Sealy-Burke and our former Political Leader, V. Nazim Burke, on the sudden passing of their loved one, Dr. Hugh Sealy.
Dr. Sealy was the brother of Mrs. Burke and an outstanding servant of the Caribbean region and leading expert in geology, the environment and energy.
Between 2009 and 2013, Dr. Sealy served as advisor and consultant on energy with the Government of Grenada and was instrumental in the negotiations that resulted in the delimitation of maritime boundaries between Grenada and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in 2010.
While continuing to have an impact on the global stage on issues relating to climate change, especially as they relate to Latin America and the Caribbean, Dr. Sealy served as an educator, lecturing at the St. George’s University for several years until 2018.
At the time of his untimely passing, Dr. Sealy was serving as Special Envoy for Climate Change for the Government of Barbados and lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus in Climate Change and Water Resource Management. One of his colleagues recalls that: “Dr. Sealy made a presentation at a PAHO meeting in 2017. It was so compelling that that the Director of PAHO decided to institute three (3) posts for Climate Change within the organization. One for the Caribbean, another for Central America and one for South America”. We have indeed lost a great and passionate servant of the people, whose work we feel was far from finished. Even so, we are thankful for and celebrate his achievements, particularly those won for the people of Grenada and the region.
I pray God grants his family comfort at this difficult time and to his soul, eternal rest. Dickon Mitchell Political Leader National Democratic Congress
