The Hon. Dickon Mitchell (born October 8, 1977) is Grenada’s 9th Prime Minister.
A man of humble beginnings, Hon. Dickon Mitchell was born to working class parents in Petite Esperance, St. David. He was raised with a fond appreciation for learning, which paved the way for a successful academic future. Hon. Dickon Mitchell received his formal primary and secondary school education at the St. David’s Roman Catholic School and Presentation Brothers College, respectively, before pursuing tertiary education at the T. A. Marryshow Community College.
After college, it was not surprising that the young scholar entered the working world as a teacher, accepting a position at his alma mater, the Presentation Brothers College. This experience cemented his belief in the transformational power of education and fuelled his desire to advocate for the educational advancement of all Grenadians.
He understood, however, that to do more, he had to become more.
In 1996, Hon. Dickon Mitchell travelled to Barbados to continue his studies at the University of the West Indies, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 2000. He went on to complete the Hugh Wooding Law School’s Legal Education Certificate (LEC) in 2002. Upon graduating, his commitment to serve Grenada brought him straight home where he commenced practicing law at Grant, Joseph and Co.
Hon. Dickon Mitchell immediately distinguished himself as a formidable lawyer, representing many individuals and business entities. His determination and drive propelled him through the ranks of the legal fraternity and, in 2005, he acquired Grant, Joseph and Co., a mere three and a half years after he began his career there.
In 2016, Hon. Dickon Mitchell opened another law firm, Mitchell & Co. This manoeuvre was strongly influenced by his vision to create more employment for young and upcoming lawyers. His ambitions have always been tethered to his desire to give back and he has never divorced himself from the community.

His diverse experiences as a teacher, mentor, and legal professional have shaped his unwavering commitment to national development, ultimately driving his decision to enter the political arena.
In October 2021, just months after joining the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Dickon Mitchell was elected as the party’s Political Leader. His appointment marked the beginning of a strategic revitalization of the NDC, reshaping its image, broadening its appeal, and energizing its support base. Through a series of dynamic transformation initiatives, he effectively rebranded the party as a credible alternative to Grenada’s long-standing political establishment.
Just eight months into his political career, Hon. Dickon Mitchell led the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to a historic victory in the June 23, 2022, General Elections, securing nine of fifteen parliamentary seats with over 51% of the popular vote. This decisive win marked the beginning of a new era in Grenadian governance. On June 24, 2022, he was officially sworn in as Prime Minister, ushering in a period of progressive leadership and national renewal.
Since assuming office, Prime Minister Mitchell has focused on governance reforms, social justice, and economic diversification. Recognizing the need for greater efficiency in national development, he established a new ministry—the Ministry of Mobilization, Implementation, and Transformation—to ensure the effective execution of government policies and initiatives.
As Minister for Finance, Prime Minister Hon. Dickon Mitchell has led transformative reforms to strengthen Grenada’s economy, labor market, and education system. His administration raised the national minimum wage for the first time in over a decade, facilitated EC$75.1 million in long-overdue pension payments, introduced bi-monthly salary payments for public servants, and began regularizing public workers to ensure job security. Under his leadership, Grenada achieved 5.5% GDP growth in 2023, reduced unemployment to 11.6%, lowered public debt to 74.6% of GDP, and maintained stable inflation at 2.3%, all while securing fiscal surpluses.
In education, he expanded access to universal secondary education, increased the mandatory school age to 18, removed school fees, introduced free tuition for TAMCC and NEWLO, and launched a free school meals program for students. His administration has modernized the curriculum, incorporating Grenadian History and coding, while enhancing student support services. Recognizing the importance of economic diversification, Hon. Dickon Mitchell has prioritized investments in the creative and blue economies, positioning Grenada for sustainable growth.
His administration has also championed digital transformation as a national priority, harnessing technology to drive efficiency, economic empowerment, and global competitiveness. Through these initiatives, Prime Minister Mitchell continues to lead a progressive agenda focused on economic stability, social equity, and national transformation.
Beyond domestic affairs, Prime Minister Mitchell has played a pivotal role on the regional and international stage. On July 21, 2024, he assumed the position of Chair of CARICOM, where he has been a leading voice on climate justice, reparatory justice, and digital skills training—key issues for small island developing states.
In his CARICOM Quasi-Cabinet role, he oversees Science and Technology, including Information and Communications, reinforcing his commitment to advancing innovation and digital integration within the region.
Further, Prime Minister Mitchell has also being at the vanguard in exploring new potentially beneficial east–west connections across the Atlantic — forging novel collaborations and trading relationships between Grenada (the Caribbean) and our sisters and brothers in Africa. Obvious outcomes of this new thrust include the recent visit to Grenada of Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote; a visit by the Benedict Okey Oramah, president of Africa’s Export-Import Bank, which is already financing development projects in the Caribbean; a visit by then president of Ghana and a signed MOU in 2024; as well as visits by other notable African international influencers in social media and fashion design.
One of his most defining moments in leadership came in July 2024, when Hurricane Beryl devastated Carriacou. Mitchell’s administration swiftly mobilized resources and led an efficient recovery effort, ensuring rapid restoration of essential services and rebuilding infrastructure in record time. His decisive action and crisis management demonstrated his commitment to national resilience and disaster preparedness.
